Recent research by IDP Education reveals a significant shift in international student preferences for study destinations. The survey, conducted in late 2024, shows that while Australia remains the top choice at 24%, followed closely by the US at 23% and the UK at 21%, Canada has fallen to fourth place at 16%. This marks a notable 9% decrease for Canada since August 2023. Interestingly, alternative destinations have gained traction and are now preferred by 11% of students. The study highlights that post-study work opportunities, pathways to permanent residency, and visa-related costs are key factors influencing students’ decisions, with many considering multiple destinations to hedge their bets in an evolving global education landscape.
